The Louie B. Nunn Center for Oral History maintains over 19,000 audio and video recordings spanning Kentucky's rich oral history. These recordings represent decades of interviews documenting the Commonwealth's people, communities, and culture.
Through the SpeakEZ project, this collection is being processed using AI-powered transcription to produce time-stamped, speaker-labeled transcripts. The system also extracts themes, identifies places and names, and flags sensitive content for review before public release.
The backlog represents thousands of hours of unprocessed interviews that previously required manual transcription — a process that could take hours per interview.
